Haunted Hoops Spooktacular Two-Day Workshop

2 Day Virtual Workshop with Mary Nesnay

Oct. 24 – 25, 2025

We will embroider 3 Halloween projects: an ITH pumpkin bag, a skull pillow, and a witchy wall hanging. These designs will teach you how to float fabrics on the top and underside of your hoop, applique techniques, using different stabilizers, getting clean edges on projects, working with ITH (in-the-hoop) vinyls, and best practices for glow-in-the-dark threads.

Finished Project Measurements

Skull Pillow

• 4” x 4” hoop = 3.5”
• 5” x 7” hoop = 5”
• 8” x 12” hoop = 7.5”

Pumpkin Bag

• 4” x 4” hoop = 4”
• 5” x 7” hoop = 5”
• 8” x 12” hoop = 8”

Witchy Wall Hanging

• 4” x 4” hoop = 4” x 14” (Acceptable hoop)
• 5” x 7” hoop = 7” x 20” (This is the size we will be creating at the event; 4” x 4” is also acceptable)
• 8” x 12” hoop = 12” x 32” (Pattern size included, but not used for this event)

Day One: October 24th

• 9am: Introduction and Mary’s Embroidery Background
• Quick discussion of ITH (in-the-hoop) projects and how they work;
• then overview of today’s agenda
• Safety reminders when embroidering
• 9:45/10: Appliqué techniques and using appliqué scissors
• Skull Pillow 1.5 - 2 hrs.
• Questions & Answers
• 12:30: Lunch
• 1:30: Pumpkin bag 1.5 – 2 hrs.

1. **Preferred hoop size: 5"x7" or larger (*4”x4” is acceptable; designs will be smaller)

5. 75/11 Embroidery Needles
6. Stabilizers:
   • 1 yard = Tear Away
   • 2 yards = Wash Away
7. 1 yard = *Pellon SF 101 Fusible Interfacing (*Optional- for pillow and pumpkin bag)
8. 60 wt. Bobbin (WHITE & BLACK)
9. 40 wt. Embroidery threads:
   • White
   • Black

10. Scotch or Painter’s Tape (for holding floating fabrics in the hoop)
11. Fabric Fuse Tape 5/8” (pumpkin bag – can also hand-stitch opening; hand sewing needle and thread are needed if you don’t use the Fabric Fuse tape)
12. Polyfil for skull pillow (enough for a 7” pillow)
13. Sewing Needle and white thread

Meet Mary Nesnay

Mary’s had the pleasure of working at the Walt Disney Company and on projects for The History Channel. Mary began embroidering in 2019, when she entered a Haunted Mansion jacket with 50 patches in Disney’s D23 Design Challenge and placed third. Since then, she continues to perfect the craft of patch making, designing ITH patterns, and digitizing, while teaching in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and on-line.
